Thinking of Bonhoeffer
My wonderful colleague Kristin Largen, with whom I am teaching this week at Gettysburg, reminded our class this morning of a quote from Dietrich Bonhoeffer:
Whoever cannot be alone should beware of community, but the reverse is also true, whoever cannot stand being in community should beware of being alone...
What a powerful reflection for those of us trying to see our way into more creative understandings of community, particularly as we face the challenges of networked individualism.
