A map of American slavery
The NYTimes has a fascinating interactive map up that is based on a map drawn from the 1860 census, the last time the US counted the slave population. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War. We have never, as a country, embarked on a truth and reconciliation process in the aftermath of slavery, let alone taken the issue of reparations seriously. Perhaps this year we could begin to do so?

Scharen commented on 05 January 2011:Mary, my South African friend Alan Storey (http://www.cmm.org.za/)is coming to Luther towards the end of February (23-24) and he's both been involved deeply in the reconciliation work in SA as well as working with United Methodist conferences in Mississippi on what such a T&A process might look like there. I'd love for you to meet him, and for us to brainstorm how to use his time with us for this sort of work.
Peace,
Chris
