RIP Edward Schillebeeckx

I missed this news, but on December 23 Edward Schillebeeckx made the transition out of this realm. He was a rare Catholic theologian: capable of clear prose and deep engagement pastorally. I remember the first time I encountered his work, in a class on Catholic theology that Francis Fiorenza was teaching at HDS. His was the book that helped me to understand that one could be a Catholic and still be thoughtful and deeply critical of specific current church policies.
