Why am I not surprised?
It had to happen. We had tornadoes yesterday in the metro area, and now a local pastor (who, yes, was the Aus Memorial Lecturer at Luther a few years back), has declared that:
The tornado in Minneapolis was a gentle but firm warning to the ELCA and all of us: Turn from the approval of sin. Turn from the promotion of behaviors that lead to destruction. Reaffirm the great Lutheran heritage of allegiance to the truth and authority of Scripture. Turn back from distorting the grace of God into sensuality.
Sigh.
I haven't been writing about the issues of sexuality being raised at the national ELCA general assembly this week, in part because my beliefs on this topic are fully represented throughout this blog, and in part because as a Roman Catholic it's not really my role to be in this conversation this week. But I can't let pass some small joy that the ELCA voted by 2/3 majority to pass the social statement on sexuality they had so carefully put together.
