catrina ciccone commented on 29 May 2008:Maybe I'm just being a crotchety old Gen Xer, but I don't think that last point (about entitlement) is really a "myth." I'm all for finding a job you love instead of settling to do something you hate for 40 years, and in our over-extended credit-based economy, it's great to save money by moving back in with the 'rents.
BUT at the same time, I'd say part of growing up is realizing that sometimes you've got to take jobs that are not your top choice in order to get to where you ultimately want to be. In my anecdotal experience with millennials, it seems many of them want the dream job handed to them as soon as they graduate, are loathe to take a lesser job as a stop-gap measure to pay the bills, and expect mom and dad to support their lifestyle until the dream job lands in their lap (a particularly ironic pursuit of personal happiness when mom and dad are endowing it via jobs they themselves do not like). Perhaps entitlement is too strong a word for this phenomena - but what else would you call it?
(And yes, I know I'm painting with awfully big brushstrokes here - certainly not all millennials act this way)
Peace,
C.
