Distinctive rhetorics

/ 24 February 2008

One of my colleagues and I have been engaged in a lengthy email exchange about the rhetoric of the Obama campaign. I’m particularly interested in her “take” on it, because she is trained in rhetoric. She pointed me off to this WSJ piece, which also notes some of the distinctive ways in which he is moving. But I’m hungry for ways to think about how his approach also is embodied in his website — which is far more participatory and engaged than Clinton’s — and in other web-related pieces (I’m thinking here of the Yes We Can, and Si Se Puede Cambiar, songs). I think rhetoric encompasses far more than the “content” of speeches, and I’m eager to learn more of what my colleague can teach me as I think about this.
