Health insurance non-plans

/ 20 September 2007

I think Barbara Ehrenreich is right: none of the plans the Dems are floating to reform health care goes far enough (with the exception of Dennis Kucinich’s and it’s not getting any attention, because he’s being successfully framed as a marginal candidate). Michael Moore has a simple prescription, with three straightforward elements that are easily remembered:

  • 1. Every resident of the United States must have free, universal health care for life.
  • 2. All health insurance companies must be abolished.
  • 3. Pharmaceutical companies must be strictly regulated like a public utility. </ul>

I suspect this prescription is so bold that most people rule it out of order in advance, believing there's no way we could get there. But indeed, most developed countries in the world follow something similar -- and it WORKS. Why is it so hard for the Democrats to take the lead on this? Medicare is going to self-destruct when the Baby Boom generation retires. We clearly need to take substantial action. Why not take it in a direction that is focused on the common good?
