Connecting across difference

/ 24 October 2006

One of my students and I have been trying to have a dialogue of sorts, using email, about issues of sexuality within the church. His position is pretty much diametrically opposed to mine, but nevertheless we’re trying to understand each other’s views. I’m encouraged, because we’ve managed several back and forth exchanges. We certainly aren’t going to convince each other, but perhaps we’ll learn something in the process.

If you are interested in politics, and think you might like to try a dialogue across the "red/blue" divide, go to this website and sign up for their online experiment. They suggest that it will require about two hours of your time, over two weeks in November. I first heard about them from the Public Conversations Project (a project I was once an intern for, back in my master's degree days), and thus I recommend this experiment as being worthwhile and grounded.
