More on Schori’s election
Here’s a powerful, firsthand account of the election of the first woman presiding bishop in the Episcopal Church USA. I will admit it brought tears to my eyes — first, because of joy for that communion, and second, because of regret that I will never live to see something similar occur in my own.

Jane Redmont commented on 30 June 2006:Very exciting. But note that some people are deeply troubled by her (and current PB Frank Griswold's) last-minute move at Convention to push through the compromise resolution on the election and ordination of bishops (which was about lgbt bishops but didn't say that explicitly). I can send you some Episcopal folks' blogs as links about this. Or you can just look them up. Try Kinesis, Telling Secrets, Father Jake Stops the World, daily episocopalian, et al. And the right wing is not happy either (see Titus One:Nine, Baby Blue, et al.) For official reports, check ENS (Episcopal News Service). Also, Anglicans Online always has excellent analysis. That said, this is still a momentous election. But the events of two days later have dampened some of the joy for many.
Still, people (see Father Jake's blog) are willing both to support Bishop Jefferts Schori and to hold her feet to the fire. Others, of course, are distressed over her election in ways that highlight what some of us have been noting for years: that the brouhaha over sexual orientation is deeply connected to that over gender, and that the same people and groups who were upset about the election, consent to, and consecration of Gene Robinson were upset three decades ago about the ordination of women -- and still are.
As I said the other day to the reporter for Beliefnet (who didn't quote me on that but on something less important): the church has always been a messy reality...
Onward with critical hope. Wise as serpents, gentle as doves.
Peace,
Jane
