Australia: day five
Yet another intense day! Today we were listening to formal research papers from a variety of disciplinary settings. Again, I have more than 20 pages of notes, so here I’ll just jot a few links I don’t want to forget:
Lynn's work with the Revolve, and Refuel youth bibles, with Native Deen (an African American muslim rap group), and with bhangra music (southeast asian dance club music that was originally Punjabi Sikh music) (particularly a music video from Apache Indian)
Paul's work with young people defining religious experience in media culture, and his website -- www.underwearer.org
Lucy Wright's work on "animism and anime" having to do with science fiction and anime mediating a shift from tech to intuitive spirituality (films she mentioned included Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell)
Tim Bulkeley's Amos website
Lorraine Bower's discussion of graphic design degree programs in Christian colleges (and a side note about the ways in which some mega churches like Hillsong and Christian City Church have created their own training programs) (And a question to myself to follow up on: do we have any graphic design/visual arts programs in area Christian colleges that might collaborate with us on a joint degree?)
There was also a fair amount of early discussion of projects just getting underway in the African context, particularly Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu's work in Ghana and Minnie Kairu's work in Kenya, and mention made of the Journal of Religion in Africa (published by Brill)
David Morgan's initial work on material artifacts and their shifting referents in the British mission fields, as well as his new book The Sacred Gaze
