Filmmaking as spiritual practice and ministry

/ 24 March 2005

I first ran into Macky Alston at the Media, Religion and Culture conference in Kentucky last year. He was showing us excerpts of the powerful documentaries he had made, and talking about the new Auburn Media Center. He has a lovely essay up at the CrossCurrents site on “filmmaking as spiritual practice and ministry.” I can’t help wondering — as I live into the discernment that is tenure review — to what extent am I supporting the flowering of such gifts when people holding them come to our seminary? I don’t know that I am, and that grieves me.
