An alternate “state of our union”

/ 3 February 2005

Thanks to a very diverse group of interfaith religious leaders for crafting an alternate address. This time, though, entitled “state of OUR union” and pointing to the moral elements public policy issues.

One of the things President Bush neglected to point out last night is that "ownership" does not necessarily confer control (does an ordinary stockholder have any control over what the company does?) nor does it eliminate the risks that come from ownership. While social security, on the other hand, is a program that in fact exists to provide SECURITY, that protects Americans from the vagaries of a stock market, and that spreads the risk over ALL of us.
