George Hunsinger on torture

/ 31 January 2005

No matter how hard I try, I can’t fathom how people of faith can believe that torture is justifiable. Even UrbanOnramps’ piece didn’t help me, because I do not think that what is being done in Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib will in any way prevent terrorist acts. George Hunsinger makes a strong statement in The Baltimore Sun today asserting four steps that our government must now take to regain its moral footing. 1) Congress must remove the false partition between the military and interrogation services on this issue. 2) Congress must outlaw extraordinary rendition. 3) President Bush needs to make a clear and strong statment opposing torture. 4) We need to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the whole mess. I am deeply appreciative that a theology professor is taking this public stance, and making clear what we can and should do!
