Certifying the vote

/ 5 January 2005

One of the most painful elements for me of watching Michael Moore’s film Fahrenheit 9/11 was the scene of Black congressperson after Black congressperson standing up to object to the certification of the 2000 election, and NOT A SINGLE SENATOR JOINING THEM. There is clear evidence of widespread problems in the Ohio vote. I doubt that anyone believes that taking a recount seriously there would change the outcome of the election, but it WOULD require our elected officials to listen to and to debate the consequences of the voting problems. This year the certification process begins imminently. Call your Senators now and ask them to join the members of the House who are objecting to this certification. Nothing “bad” is going to happen if we manage to get these issues debated in Congress. Something bad already has happened, and threatens to become more widespread if we don’t attend to it. Everyone — whether you are conservative or liberal, libertarian or progressive, Christian or not — ought to care about the fairness of our electoral process.
