Framing the convention

/ 3 September 2004

The concept of “frames” — “frames already exist in our minds, and in our thinking, as categories that structure language. People think in terms of frames, and words evoke conceptual frames. Framing is something we all do naturally” — is oft-cited in the communication studies world. It has surprised me how little of such framing in terms of the political situation in the US is being discussed at this meeting I’m currently attending. But there’s a lot of such discussion taking place in the blogosphere! Geoge Lakoff, in particular, has kept up a running commentary on the “frames” of the Republican convention, for Monday’s, Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s prime time slots. I can’t wait to see what he does with Bush’s speech from last night. He also had advice for the Democrats after the Boston convention.
