The coming oil peak

/ 29 July 2004

Do you know how the coming oil peak will affect you? Do you even know what it is? I didn’t. ME3, which is “Minnesotans for an energy efficient economy,” has a lovely — but rather alarming — web essay up that explains that the oil peak is the moment when half the world’s oil has been used, and half remains in the ground. No one can say precisely when this moment will occur. It might even be this year! Or it could happen in a decade. Still, the point is that oil is not just about gas for cars or home heating, it’s also about all of the ways in which we use plastic, etc. etc. Check out the essay for the list of ways you can reduce your consumption of, and dependence on, oil.
