ARGH! PBS

/ 27 July 2004

Argh! I have just watched Teresa Heinz Kerry’s speech at the convention with rapt attention, and several times with tears in my eyes. And now, I”m listening — argh, why am I doing this? — to the commentary of the PBS talking heads afterwards. “Oh,” they say, “she didn’t connect enough, she wasn’t emotional enough…”” argh… “Oh,” it was “wonky”… she “spent too much time on issues…”

I'm sitting in a hotel in Chicago because I'm in town for a teaching/learning clinic tomorrow. Thank God for the web, and the ethernet connection this hotel supplies. Were it not for the net, I would not have seen the video on Teresa's background. Why do these commentators believe their punditry is more useful to me than simply allowing me to watch what's going on?!? This hotel's cable does not carry C-SPAN, so that wasn't an option. I can't deal with this, I need to turn it off.

But wait, a brainstorm -- this hotel DOES carry the comedy channel (don't ask me why that's included but C-SPAN is not) -- and Jon Stewart's just come on. Oh this is excellent, as I'm turning it on they're making fun of the commentators. One of them, pretending to be a journalist notes "I'll be on the floor all day ignoring the content of the speeches and asking irrelevant questions about Teresa Heinz Kerry's behavior."

The Daily Show is funny, to the point and easing my frustation. I'll write more later. Off for now.
