God in politics

Body&Soul has a rich commentary today on a number of pieces that explore the media coverage of the candidates’ religious commitments.

Kerry -- or his backups -- ought to draw more attention to the way Bush and Company repeatedly insult people of faith by ordering them around, treating them as nothing but unpaid campaign workers, and suggesting that God is on their side.

Faith doesn't exist for the greater glory of George W. Bush.

And they ought to emphasize again and again that the reason we value the separation of church and state in this country is not just to keep government free from theological debates that have nothing to do with government, but to keep religion free from the influence of unscrupulous politicians who want to twist it to their own purposes.

John Kerry's mantra ought to be: Unlike George Bush, I do not want to see the government giving orders, or even suggestions, to church leaders.
