Stealth defense of gay marriage?

/ 6 March 2004

Jonathan Rauch has a nice piece in the Sunday NYT Magazine (isn’t the web wonderful?) that argues that Bush, by the very arguments he used, points out why inviting gays into marriage is a good thing:

In endorsing the passage of a constitutional amendment that would restrict marriage to the union of men and women, President Bush established himself as the country's most prominent advocate of same-sex marriage. To be more precise, he established himself as the most prominent advocate of the best arguments for gay marriage, even as he roundly rejected gay marriage itself.
