Letters to the editor in Wisconsin papers

I’m pleased — as someone born and raised in Wisconsin — to find independent thinkers contributing their own letters to the editor in the papers there. Here’s a nice collection that supports Dean.

Quotes Dance Before My Eyes

These days thinking about the abuse and torture of Iraqi prisoners, I can't help but bring a number of quotes to mind.

The first is "power corrupts....absolute power corrupts absolutely." Lord Acton. Those who feel they are on "God's side" feel comfortable exercising power. We need to ask ourselves if this is an helpful way to behave as a person and as a country?

The second is "to error is human." Bible Isn't it illuminating how difficult it is to admit a mistake and make restitution?

Finally, I must quote Joan L. Piper, who lost her beloved daughter Laura in a friendly fire mishap in the no-fly zone over Iraq. Even having a husband who was a military person himself to assist her, she concluded after exhaustive efforts to bring justice and responsibility for her daughter's death, that "if the truth were to be told, she would have to tell it." Her tale is in the book A Chain Of Events

If we want to get to the bottom of our immoral and despicable behavior in Iraq we need an independent and impartial panel to investigate and recommend punishment to all those responsible.

It will never happen with the fox guarding the chicken pen."We have met the enemy......and the enemy is us." Pogo.
