Poetry is not a luxury…

/ 30 July 2003

Audre Lorde, one of my favorite poets and theorists, once wrote that “poetry is not a luxury” (found in her book “Sister Outsider”). These days I am ever more sure of that, as it becomes more and more important to name and claim the realities we are living with — particularly in the teeth of mass mediated pressure to do the opposite. Adán points to a powerful poem at soychicano.com, and reminds us that poetry can be used in liturgy, too! (In fact, some of the most powerful liturgies I’ve been a part of, blessed poetic texts that came from outside of the biblical canon.)
