More culturally sharp — and funny! — comics

/ 24 May 2003

Adan’s weblog reminds me of Lalo Alcaraz’s “La Cucaracha” comic strip, which in turn reminds me Aaron McGruder’s “The Boondocks.” If you haven’t read either, you might also find this Washington Post article an interesting introduction. And while I’m at it, my other favorites are Doonesbury (whose Town Hall site now lives at Slate) and For Better or Worse. Adan also points off to “cartoonista.com,” whose current front page sports a “Che Guevara’ish” President Bush with the slogan “Freedumb Fighter.” I have to admit that’s funny! But I also think we need —now more than ever — not to underestimate the strategic brilliance and intelligence displayed by this administration. I don’t like their policies, in fact, I’m deeply disturbed by most of them, but they’ve managed to make them either the “law of the land,” or at least a reasonable facsimile thereof. We ought not to deceive ourselves into thinking we don’t have to be just as smart and strategic in response.
