Should I promote this film?

/ 27 August 2012

I received a very interesting email today, from a film production company seeking to invite viewers to a local showing of a film entitled Hellbound. It was interesting to me because I had no idea whom the author of the email was, or why they were writing to me, other than perhaps I’m a professor at a seminary, and I write about media. I’m not at home right now, or I could ask, but it’s possible that all of my colleagues also received the invitation.

It's also interesting to me, because watching the trailer it's very hard for me to figure out in advance how authoritative the film might be for me. It's not clear what the perspective of the film is, and although it's done as a documentary, I'm savvy enough to realize that documentary film can be deeply manipulative.

So what do you think? Here's the trailer. Should I be trying to get people to go to it?

(PS: I don't think I have a choice about going myself, because there appears to be only one showing, and it's the evening of our faculty retreat. That reality actually makes me sad, because I'd like to see the film for myself.)
