Interrogating textbooks about racial violence

There’s an interesting study written by Kefflyn Brown and Anthony Brown, that the Teachers College Record makes available for free this month. The study explores the depictions of racial violence in history textbooks in Texas. (Texas is such a large market that many textbook publishers write for that market, and then sell their books throughout the US.) Among other things, the study points to the ways in which racial violence is framed as the work of crazed individuals, with heroic individuals resisting that violence, rather than any recognition of the structural and institutional factors involved.
