Using biblical songs as torture

/ 23 June 2009

I suppose you could read my title, and have images of kids being forced to sit through syrupy summer camp songs come to mind. But actually, I’m referring to this piece, which points out that the Boney M version of Psalm 137 was used as part of the torture process at Abu Ghraib. Just when I think I’ve heard it all and can’t be any more disgusted by what we perpetrated there, news like this comes along and induces nausea in me again.

As Erin Runion asks "What does it mean when a country that likes to proclaim itself as beyond slavery plays a song about freedom to people it is torturing?"
