Definition of mission

/ 26 July 2008

A quote from Barry Taylor (204):

... mission might be the journey of Christians into all the world to discover the liberating mission of Jesus in transforming encounter with others, and discovery is almost always the result of adventure, creativity, and risk.

Lately I've been talking about mission in ways somewhat similar, particularly doing a "riff" off the Matthew 28 verse where Jesus urges his disciples to "go and make disciples" -- and my sense that a better translation of "disciple" for us might be learner. Learning, of course, is a journey fraught with opportunities for transformation, where the person transformed may more often be oneself, rather than anyone else! In any case, because of all of this I like the Taylor quote.
