Called to be a public church

/ 12 February 2008

I’ve written previously about the statement the Catholic bishops put out in advance of the election, seeking to offer thoughtful engagement. But it’s very little compared with the piece that the ELCA has put out. You can download the whole thing in pdf, or buy it in print and not only does it offer nonpartisan advice on issues that the church has offered teaching statements on, but it ALSO has an incredibly useful set of details about what churches CAN do, and how to engage the electorate responsibly and without getting into legal trouble. I think it’s a fabulous resource, parts of which are likely to be useful to churches across a wide theological spectrum.
