White privilege

/ 3 August 2007

Here’s an eloquent post on the dangers of using the “white privilege” label. All too often it becomes another way to reinscribe racism, rather than a way to deconstruct it. I still think the notion of “white privilege” can be useful, since it helped me (and I hope other white folk) recognize how implicated we are in structures of oppression. Still, it’s crucial to remember — as this writer points out — that the goal is getting rid of racism, not easing white folks’ sense of shame and guilt!
