London bombs

/ 8 July 2005

This morning, just after our plane landed in Melbourne and we were taxiing to the gate, the pilot came on and announced that he had some unfortunate news to share with us. He told us that several bombs had gone off in London, and that many people had died and many more were injured. It was a stark announcement, and it startled me. I think something about the long flight, and the weird white noise of a plane, had lulled me into a strange kind of alternative reality where it seemed like time was suspended. So landing and then abruptly “re-entering” time felt shocking.

All I can do is pray at this point. Pray for Londoners, pray for the world. I hate to even guess what this will mean to the people in the US who are trying to foment fear.
