Ohio nun killed in Brazil

/ 13 February 2005

Yet again we mourn a strong woman of faith who was killed for her beliefs and solidarity with the poor. Dorothy Stang, originally from Dayton, Ohio was murdered this weekend in Brazil, where she had been helping rural farmworkers and fighting deforestation in the rainforest. Surely God weeps!

I say "yet again" because it reminds me all too strongly of the four women martyred in Central America now more than 20 years ago. One of them was also from Ohio. In mourning these women we must also mourn all those for whom we do not have names, all those with whom these women were sharing solidarity.
