As a Catholic I support Kerry

/ 20 October 2004

I’m tired of having people direct me to the “KerryWrongforCatholics” site, which goes into great detail about a limited number of issues in which Kerry’s positions are at odds with Catholic teaching. (And which betrays some people’s limited stance on Catholic teaching — connecting it primarily to issues of sexuality, rather than the seamless web of life.) Instead, I ask people to consider, first, what the US bishops have suggested we consider — that is, what it means to be a faithful CITIZEN across all of our lives. If people are still wondering where Kerry stands on this specific set of issues (the issues our bishops have identified), then I direct them to a “Kerry Right for Catholics” press release which goes through the bishops’ guide point by point. My primary point, however, is that no candidate will ever represent completely what Catholicism teaches, but John Kerry is himself a faithful Catholic and his proposals are by far more consistent with the Bishops’ call then is the Bush Administration.
