Leave Iraq

/ 24 July 2004

For many months now I have been worried about what the US ought to be doing in Iraq. On the one hand, it seemed to me that having created such a huge mess with this war, we were obligated to stay and fix it. On the other hand, I wondered if it wasn’t quite arrogant to believe that “we” could fix it. More and more I am growing convinced that at this point we simply need to get out, and support international efforts to help Iraq find a way to a true civil society. Scott Ritter’s recent piece on the issue is compelling. His view of Iraq, as a former weapons inspector, suggests he has great credibility.
