Still high tonight…

/ 3 March 2004

I’ve been way too busy today to reflect on last night’s DFL precinct caucuses, but I’m still high! It was a really energizing experience — our precinct, which usually averages around 20 people, had 153 show up. We had so many resolutions presented that we couldn’t engage them all, and so voted to send the whole group forward to the next level, to be debated there. Our presidential preference poll went Kerry, Edwards, Kucinich, Dean, Clark — I think Kucinich had one of his best showings yet in Minnesota. Eric is now our precinct chair, and we are both delegates on to the next level. I have to credit the Dean campaign with this, because I doubt there’s any way I would have gotten this involved otherwise. People all over the state are reporting similar experiences. Then, tonight, on my way to the parish council meeting, I dropped in briefly to our local Dean Meet-up — which was hopping with more people than I’ve seen before, and also tons of energy. There’s something really fascinating about a campaign that wins its first state (Vermont) after the candidate’s dropped out, and draws even more people to its meet-ups. Once again, something is moving. It may not fit the master narratives the press is pursuing (tangentially, there’s a nice piece up at Jay Rosen’s site musing on master narratives), but there’s something going on and it’s really exciting and gives me great hope for our ability to toss out this administration come November.
