Dean suspends his campaign

/ 18 February 2004

Well, it’s official: Howard Dean has suspended his campaign. You can hear his speech from today here. What does this mean? I think it will take a while to figure that out. Clearly he’s stopped campaigning. On the other hand, he remains on the ballot in several states that haven’t yet weighed in (Minnesota among them). We can still vote for him, which will have at least some impact. Whether it’s the impact you desire, each voter will have to decide for themselves. I intend to keep an eye on the Dean weblog, the Truthandhope.org weblog, the changeforamerica.com weblog, and the national grassroots blog. There are so many elements of what Dean stood for that I want to continue to work towards. I keep hearing echoes of his speeches in my ears…. “what we lack in Washington is leaders as good as the American people,” “our biggest loss wasn’t … (long litany), our biggest loss was of community,” “real choice, real change,” “the truth is that the power to change this country is in your hands, not mine,” “share the power, invite everybody,” “we have to fight until it becomes a change of conviction, not convenience.” One other group I intend to stay in touch with? Wellstone action, and the Wellstone meet-ups (whose next meet-up is March 1).
