Letters from the troops

/ 23 December 2003

Michael Moore has put a vast selection of letters up on his website that he’s received from US military personnel. Granted, these writers are probably a self-selected bunch, but the letters are heartbreaking, enraging, and definitely worth reading. Michael’s letter contextualizing them brought me to tears. We need to support our troops — not with empty promises, but with real support and with real efforts to bring this madness to a reasonable conclusion. I’m leaning toward the opinion that says we can’t just pull out unilaterally, given the mess we’ve created, but I DO think we can internationalize the effort, make the bidding on reconstruction contracts open and fair, and come clean about our reasons for being there in the first place. (And yes, these are Dean’s suggestions.)
