Remembering Walter Ong

/ 22 August 2003

I guess my lack of time to be reading the web has meant that I’ve lost out on news, too. Last week Walter Ong died. Jonathan Druy has started a weblog to encourage people to remember Walter Ong, and it also has links to some of the more vibrant of the Ong sites on the web. I still remember the first time that I read Ong’s book “Orality and Literacy,” and the impact it had on me. I think his work with anthropological ideas about culture and communication got me started down the road on cultural studies. I’m grateful for the privilege to have encountered this man and his work, and offer prayers for his family and close friends as they deal with their grief.
