Living with hope even in confronting war

/ 27 March 2003

One of the best essays I’ve read lately was just published in this week’s National Catholic Reporter, by Clarissa Pinkola Estés. It’s entitled “Finding life amid death.” In it Estés writes “we have learned to no longer fear death, but only fear not living hard enough, deep enough, sweet enough with whatever good we have been given…” Her witness is powerful and reminds me of why I’m thoroughly a Catholic Christian, even when the church I love so much is so riddled with sinfulness. The article also has an evocative and short list of ways to stay in touch with the wellsprings of our faith and hope in the midst of all that we must have the courage to confront.
