Reporter blog from Iraq

/ 16 March 2003

An interesting use of blogging: Kevin Sites is a CNN reporter — a “sojo” meaning “solo journalist” — who has done an enormous amount of reporting from the front lines of various conflicts. He’s in Iraq now, and maintaining a blog on his experience. One ominous piece from the reporter grapevine that he picks up speculates that the Air Force may have developed an electromagnetic pulse capable of taking all cell phones, computers, etc. down. This would make it impossible to use what is now conventional technology to record and report on what is happening in the arena there (look for his March 10th entry on “da bomb”). This morning I clicked over to see what he was writing about and the site noted that his satellite phone connection had failed during the post, ending it prematurely. Technology fails all of the time, but given my heightened sense of impending doom it’s hard to see this as simply a coincidence.
