Joy, song, hope

/ 20 June 2012

I’ve been caught up this past week in the Crosswinds School performance of the musical Hairspray. Longtime readers of this blog will know that we’ve been fighting for a long time to keep this school open (both of our kids have been there, and Nate’s currently a 9th grader). It’s a public school committed to integration, in a public school collaborative committed to integration, and there are local forces seeking to shut it down. It’s been a long fight, and it’s not over yet. But there is joy in the struggle, and watching the kids of this school dance and sing their hearts out has been magical and marvelous. If you’re anywhere near the Twin Cities, you should come and see the show (June 21, 22, 23 at 7:30 pm, and June 24th at 2 pm; tickets $7 for adults, $5 for kids). Eventually there will be video available, but in the meantime, here’s a wonderful example of kids dancing that also brings me joy.
