Acts of faith and hope

/ 8 June 2008

Our priest today was preaching about the Catholic notion of “acts of” prayers — things like “act of faith,” “act of hope,” etc. I came home and sweated through moving our lawn (I let it get too long, and our reel mower doesn’t work as well when its long), and then came inside. Eric says — “there’s a video you have to see, Mary” — so I logged in and watched this.

I think Eric's right, and I think Sen. Obama is also right (one of the things he says near the end is that we have no choice but to win, because it matters so much). And so, in the moment feeling sweaty, and tired, and a little overwhelmed, I am also lifted up a bit. I think it's an act of faith, of a different kind perhaps than that embedded in believing in Jesus Christ, but nevertheless, a bit of faith involved in choosing to get involved in the messy world of politics in order to make a difference. And we can do that, we can make a difference!
