Vote for sustainability

/ 3 July 2007

We have a wonderful architect, John Dwyer of Shelter Architecture, who helped us with our attic renovation a couple of years ago. I think we’re going to be one of the proud people who get to say “we knew him when….” because at the time he started working with us, he was just finishing school. In any case, his firm has been working hard on a collaboration with the University of Minnesota to create integrated and self-sustaining architecture that is easily reproduced and used in conditions such as those which ordinarily create refugee nightmares. His firm has a shot, now, at huge support for such a project, through an American Express fund. I don’t have an American Express card, but for any you who do, I’d love it if you’d read his appeal (below the fold) and consider voting for their project. Each vote brings an additional $1 for the projects!

Greetings-

For those who may not know, a couple years ago we began collaborating with Architecture for Humanity and the University of Minnesota on a project of global significance. The vision was to create integrated and self sustaining infrastructure for the over 750 million people worldwide who live without basic sanitation, water or power. What came out of it was an idea we dubbed the Clean Hub, a small scale, but highly replicable solution.

About a month ago, we submitted the project to American Express for consideration as one of the Members Projects. They received over 3,000 project ideas and, early this morning, they announced ours as one of the final 50. Over the next 11 days, the field will be narrowed to 25 based on popular vote. Here’s where we need help.

If you or anyone you know has an American Express card, please log in at http://www.membersproject.com/Community_Development/1489 and vote. It’s free for cardholders and for everyone who votes, American Express donates $1 to the project.

Thanks for your time and consideration.
