Dove campaign

/ 21 May 2007

I’ve been watching a lot more live television here than I ever did at home. In part that’s because it’s a great way to pick up more German, and in part it’s because I’m still feeling sick enough that sitting in front of a television is about what I have the energy for. In any case, there’s lots to be said about the differences between Austrian national television programming, and what we get in the states. Maybe one day I’ll elaborate on that! In the meantime, thanks to Claire’s link to this film (which demonstrates how retouching works), I’m reminded of how much I enjoy the Dove commercials that are frequently aired here.

Dove has a "campaign for real beauty" that among other things (and there are many), broadcasts commercials of much more realistic-looking women, beautifully framed. There are women in these commercials of many ages and sizes. I haven't seen all of them, and so perhaps the omissions I'd note (women with disabilities) are simply because I haven't caught them. But regardless of such criticism, the commercials are a nice break from the usual muck.
