A central dilemma: Nurturing dialogue

How do you nurture dialogue in a class of diverse students? What can you do when a conversation turns problematic? Are there ways to reflect on dialogue, and bring new lenses to it? My web project uses a critical incident from a class I taught during the spring of 2001, to think about these teaching and learning issues.

Please note: I don't think I handled this incident at all well! But it has given me much food for thought, and I hope you will help me to continue that reflection.

Below you will find four links. The first is to a page that contains links to the conversation from the class listserv. The next three lead off to quotations from some of the people who've helped me to think about these issues. The final link connects to other websites that I think have been useful to me.
